Your First Visit
Preparation
During your first visit to Ancient Arts, the doctor will discuss your pet's medical past and general health. The New Patient Intake Forms provide a wealth of information that can help diagnose what is affecting your pet and steer the course of treatment. This is also a great time to discuss any questions or concerns you have about acupuncture and holistic veterinary care. A complete physical exam will be performed as well.
What to Expect
The ultimate goal of the first session is to assess the underlying conditions that have led to your pet's current symptoms. Acupuncture can be scheduled ahead of time for the same visit for an additional allotted 30-minute session. An initial Holistic Exam is required for all New Patients in order to receive ccupuncture and other services.
Please note that acupuncture will only be performed if the doctor feels it will be beneficial and that your pet can handle it. It is only natural that some animals are too sensitive for the acupuncture needles, in which case alternative therapies can be performed including LASER photon therapy. The initial acupuncture session may last as little as five minutes or as long as thirty, depending on your pet's reaction and condition. If necessary, herbal supplements and a home therapy program will be prescribed.
Follow-Up
While you may see an immediate change in your pet after the first session, most ailments will require a series of treatments. Recent injuries or issues may respond more quickly to acupuncture than chronic or long-term conditions. While initial treatments will most likely be weekly or bi-weekly, later appointments may be spaced out further until your pet no longer needs acupuncture.
It is natural that your pet may seem sleepy after a session. The occasional return to acupuncture may be needed for some conditions. As an example, for chronic arthritis, pets often do best if receiving ongoing treatments. Some patients come weekly, some once every 2 months. Individual variety and overall severity of symptoms affects what will be recommended for your pet.
Please note, 30 minutes are allotted for Holistic Exams. If questions persist at the end of the appointment, another exam may be required in order to best assist all of our clients and respect the doctor's and staff's time.
